Navigation Courses - North Yorkshire
They are held within two National Parks found in North Yorkshire.
The North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales.
Both deserve a separate page, as they are both unique in their features.

North York Moors
The terrain of the North York Moors consists of an expansive, rolling heather moorland plateau dissected by deep dales (valleys), often containing woodland and cultivated land. Key features include the striking North Sea coastline with high cliffs, the elevated Cleveland Hills and Hambleton Hills forming steep escarpments to the north and west, and the southeastern Tabular Hills.
The highest peak on the Moors is only 440 metres, at Round Hill, on Urra Moor. On the North York Moors, we tend to practice navigation on the higher plateau, where there is the availability of open access land upon which to practice.Â

Yorkshire Dales
The area is known for its famous Three Peaks: Pen-y-Ghent, Ingleborough & Whernside.
Its deep ravines, such as Gordale Scar, and fantastic limestone features such as Malham Cove and pavement.
The geology of the area consists of Limestone, Millstone Grit, and Shale, which have been weathered by glacial erosion. Sheep-grazed grasslands, bracken, heather, and blanket bogs top this.
On the Navigation Courses, we tend to shy away from the higher and more famous peaks, concentrating on the lower slopes (450 metres), where navigation is more complex.
Testimonials
Great day hiking, learning map skills, and how to use a compass properly. We spent the whole day with Jim in the Yorkshire Dales and it was amazing learning all the detail on the map that we have never used before. Jim has a lot of experience in this area and taught us so much that will make our hikes more fun and safer. We’ve been out a few hill walks since then and have really used all the skills we learnt in that day. Thoroughly recommend this course.

Great experience were my lessons with Jim. I really enjoy spending time with Jim he doesn’t
only teach you map reading, but lots of other key pointers whilst out on the hill. He really
tailored the lesson to the assessment I was preparing for, which I am extremely grateful for.
My map reading has came on a long way since my lessons with Jim. I look forward to doing more lessons including night navigation with him

I had a very productive time with Jim on a damp, misty autumn day learning basic map and compass skills. The information provided before the day was very helpful as are the laminated flip cards supplied afterwards as an aide memoir.
I would highly recommend
